Comics Youth is partnering with the Environment Agency to bring you Rising Voices: The Art and Science of Flood Defence , an exciting creative course that combines art, science, and activism to explore how we can respond to climate change together. This 12-week zine-making project is designed to help marginalised 16–25-year-olds from the North West learn about flood defences, express their views through art, and find positive ways to tackle climate anxiety.
Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time, and its impacts are already being felt , especially through flooding. In the North West, we’re seeing more coastal, river, and surface water floods, affecting homes and communities. These challenges are only expected to grow in the coming years, but knowledge and creativity are powerful tools for change.
If you’re someone who feels anxious, uncertain, or overwhelmed about the future of our planet, this project offers a supportive and inspiring space to learn, connect, and create.
The workshops will take place at Callister Gardens, a welcoming community garden in Oxton, Birkenhead ,Prenton CH43 4UG.
The programme will start on the 14th of January 2026 and will run for 12 weeks. Sessions will be held every Wednesday from 5:00 – 6:30 PM.
If you’re selected for this opportunity, you’ll need to commit to attending all 12 sessions. Places on the course are limited, so we want to make sure that those who take part are ready to fully engage and make the most of this unique experience.
Over 12 weeks, you’ll take part in a series of creative workshops where you’ll design and produce your own five-page zine on the theme of flood defences. This is a chance to use your artistic voice to raise awareness, explore solutions, and build confidence in understanding climate issues.
You’ll receive a total fee of £1,200 for your work:
£150 for each page of your finished zine
£50 for every workshop session you attend
Extra support is available to help cover travel costs
Throughout the course, you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with flood defence engineers, climate activists, and artists. Together, you’ll explore how science and creativity can work side by side to tell powerful stories about climate resilience. You’ll take part in site visits across the Wirral, seeing first-hand how flood defences are maintained, and learning from the people who protect our coastlines and communities.
At the end of the project, your completed zine will be showcased at Comic Con and other community events, celebrating your creativity and sharing your message with the wider public.
