October Newsletter

Happy best month of the year, pals!

Pinch, punch, um, sixth of the month and all that as October creeps into view and we’re all duty bound to remark on how quickly this year has gone. But month-based cringey jokes aside, we thought we’d reach out and give you a glimpse into all things Comics Youth with our new monthly Newsletter. Welcome to our world of mischief, comics, and mayhem!

We are ready for the coming autumn and like a particularly forward-thinking squirrel we have made preparations to help us all through it. First of all, we’ll be breaking down what sessions are available for you to book onto right now, what they entail, what’s coming up in the future and how we’ve changed things for the better.

Here at CY towers, we do not go on for laurel resting. Oh no. So we’re also unveiling the curtain and giving you a sneaky peek on our shiny upcoming publication projects. Yeah, that’s right, we run a young person’s publishing house now too!

All our love, team CY XOXO

The Creative Collective

The Comics Youth Creative Collective is a safe space for young people aged 14-25 to work on their creative projects with support from their peers or CY staff. It's also a space where you can chill out, use our switch, play board games or take part in a range of activities and workshops we have on offer.
Sessions are held every Saturday in our Office HQ (Suite 3.3, Tempest Building, L2 2DT).
If you’d like to sign up for the sessions, please book here or email Kay, the session leader, for more information on kay@comicsyouth.co.uk

Upcoming Publications

Coming this month – LGBT+Me!

This new publication follows a group of friends at a sleepover, exploring different topics like identity, mental health and fears for the future. A mashup of an illustrated comic and an educational zine, the reader is able to learn whilst following a wholesome story.

Here we can see co-authors Bell and Paul celebrating their hard work! LGBT+Me will be a FREE resource, due to be released early this month. Keep an eye on our socials to find out how you can get your free copy (or copies!)

Coming this month- Mind Over Margins!

Our latest Graphic Medicine Anthology book is nearly ready to hit the store. Mind Over Margins will be available to pre-order on October 10th World Mental Health day.

"Your mind matters. Your voice matters. Your story matters.

Take a journey through the mind of young artists as they explore a diverse range of mental health issues that stem from their lived experiences of belonging to a marginalised identity. In this comic anthology, you will find an eclectic range of unique voices, heartfelt personal stories and an array of brilliant styles."

Behind the scenes at our Marginal Publishing House
What is the Marginal Publishing House?

Marginal is a revolution in publishing. Led by young people, for young people, Marginal is the first youth-led publisher of its kind in the UK. With it, we hope to not just change the landscape of young people’s reading in the UK, we also strive to use Marginal as a platform with which to nurture marginalised talent and express a diverse set of voices and experiences which are currently going unheard.

Update

Working closely with young creators to help them realise and develop their vision, Marginal aims to publish a diverse collection of books which reflect the full diaspora of identities, backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of marginalised young people.

Here we have four different projects from Marginal, all in different stages of development. There is no right or wrong way to make comics, it's all about what best fits your own personal style!

Below you'll find three variations on how our marginal members tackle thumbnails. Some use them as a heavy guide for their pencils, others try to convey a feeling or tone, and some meticulously try to plan every panel before jumping onto their pencils.

Also, we're nearing the completion of a graphic novel called Without Ceremony. You can see a small in-progress sneak peek here before we're ready to share more!
