Blogging can be intimidating, but it seriously needn’t be! The best blog posts stick to a very simple formula. They bounce off the page because they’re evocative, fun, passionate, and lively.

And you – with all your distinctive charms and colossal skills! – can definitely write a killer blog post of your own! If not many. Here’s how:

Step One: Have a concise & specific idea

Trust me, we all love to wax lyrical about several topics at once. Going off on tangents about anything and everything gives us life! But this kind of thinking doesn’t exactly translate to a great blog post.

Instead, make sure that whatever it is you want to write or create art about is focused on just the one idea or subject. Over-complicating that won’t just make your art or writing more difficult to work on, it’ll also make it more difficult to read and understand. Keep it simple: For yourself and for the audience.

Step Two: Aim for a word count and stick to it!

Blog posts don’t need to be some several-thousand-word epic essay. In fact, long blogposts like those turn to be a turn off for readers who are usually looking for something quick and easy to read online.

To make your piece easy to write, set yourself a word limit and try to stick to it! Anything between 500 and 800 words is a sweet spot worth trying for, depending on whatever it is you want to say and how you want to say it.

Step Three: Pictures are your pals!

Um, hello?! Who doesn’t love a good gif?! Blogs are the perfect medium with which to blend visuals with writing, so use it to your advantage!

Why not do some doodles or illustrations that you can add to your piece? Or break up writing every couple of paragraphs with an appropriate gif that helps to illustrate your point? (seriously, Giphy is your friend!).

Step Four: Structure is Everything

Every piece of writing – whether it be a poem, an essay, a call-to-action or a love letter to Flaming Hot Cheetos – features the same structure: They always have a start, a middle and an end.

It sounds basic, we know. But it’s amazing how many people forget about this when making a blog post! Be sure to thoroughly but concisely introduce your subject and idea at the start, throw all the meaty details into the middle, and then really drive home and tie-up your main points for the ending.

Step Five: Come up with a killer title for your post

Ah yes, the super important but often overlooked title of it all. Include words that are key to the subject and story of your piece and frame them in a way that entices the reader to want to check out your work!

Make it clear! Make it fun! Make it cool!
