Comics Youth Shortlisted for the Children and Young People Now Awards 2019!
We’ve been shortlisted as a finalist in the Mental Health and Wellbeing Award category as part of the prestigious awards for our empowering young people programme, Building Stories.
This is definitely a good excuse to eat loads of cake, right?!
Building Stories has been recognised as an exceptional achievement by the CYP Now Awards, which celebrates the best organisations, teams, initiatives, and resources who work with young people, children, and families in the UK. Our programme builds up children and young people aged 8 - 25 in the Liverpool City Region by engaging them with comic book creation and reading sessions tailored to improve their wellbeing.
The children and young people we serve in Building Stories can struggle with issues of self-confidence, isolation, and health diagnosis’ and can be reluctant readers. However, we strive to build them back up via the power of storytelling in inclusive spaces, providing empowerment, self-expression, and perspective in stories they can immerse themselves in and create for themselves.
By bringing the sessions to settings such as community centres, libraries, hospitals, and day centres, Building Stories has always aimed to break down participation barriers to ensure that nobody is left behind in the fight for inclusion and prosperity on a personal and community level.
We’re obviously proud as punch to be recognised by the CYP Now Awards for this achievement. But we owe an extra loud shout-out to our phenomenal team who have carried out this work to such a high standard and of the young people who have fought through their own challenges to find triumph and optimism by engaging with it.
The CYP Now Awards ceremony takes place on November 21st in London where Comics Youth will share the honour of sharing the Mental Health and Wellbeing Award category with such outstanding programmes and organisations as Healthy Minds Lincolnshire, IHEART Schools Resilience Programme, London Borough of Newham’s HeadStart Newham, NSPCC’s The Lighthouse, Participation People’s #YouthProof Mental Wellness, and Young Devon Young Victims of Crime Service. We wish the best of luck and love to everyone!
