Safe Spaces Trail- Anglican Cathedral

This is a transcript from the podcast episode around Anglican Cathedral. You can listen to the podcast here. This was written by Eve.

The bustling city hums below, with endless, crashing waves of activity and noise. As the waves constantly climb higher and higher, it feels impossible to keep our heads above water. We try to swim, to rise with the tides, but the waves can tower over us, the currents can pull us under. All of a sudden it feels more like drowning.

But in this space, under the tower and the arches, between the intricate details in the walls, the city becomes something entirely different. Whispers bounce off the bricks, echoes dance in the air. In the twinkles of tiny sounds, the hush hugs us close.

Outside, it feels like the loudness always wins, like our voices will never be heard. In a world that holds its definition of success to monetising our every move or whoever is shouting the loudest, drowning can feel inevitable. It’s even worse when you’re thrown into the tide before you even know how to tread water. What if you don’t want to compete, or shout loud enough to drown everyone else out?

In here, it’s different. In this space, no longer are we left loose, drifting in the tides, being swept around in countless currents. The hum softens into hushed tones; the waves finally break.

Here, we can make the space our own. We can be part of the silence, just exist in the calmness, be whatever we want to be.

The space here is bubbling with possibility. Disappear into the low light, send our voices up into the sky, hear our thoughts leap from the walls and merge with other voices. Here, we are quiet but we are loud; we are hidden but we are seen; we are anonymous but we matter; we are alone but we are together.

Here we are safe.
